Hi
My 4 year old shih Tzu has been diagnosed with kidney disease at the weekend, high blood pressure and anaemic. They say it is stage 3 - stage 4 being the worst. This only came to light when his brother (from the same litter) went to have teeth cleaned and bloods were taken beforehand & showed kidney disease, so I took my dog at the weekend and he has the same, but worse levels. He has been given benzacare for the high BP. His urine has been sent away as they found a bit of blood in it and said this may be an infection on top of the kidney disease. He's showed no signs at all so I was stunned to say the least - as was my friend who has my dogs brother.
His food has been changed to renal but I'm looking for recipes that will also help and I'm struggling to get my head around the calcium and phosphorus ratio.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Emma,

Sorry to hear about your dog. Pet Diet Designer for Windows (PDD) is designed for healthy dogs and cats. However, many of our clients use it to design recipes for disease conditions. You have to know what you are doing. We are coming out with 2 new versions of our product (Plus and Pro) that will let you design recipes easily for disease conditions. We will start out with the most common diseases that can be managed nutritionally and keep adding. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) will be one of the first.

Since renal damage is irreversible, the goal of nutritional management in Stage III/IV disease is to alter disease progression and control uremic symptoms. Protein should be reduced to the minimum requirement. Phosphorus must be reduced. Calcium, sodium, chloride, magnesium should be at normal levels (not much higher than 100% in Nutrient Summary when balancing for minimum requirement).

Calcium : Phosphorus ratio should be in the green area.

You should work closely with your vet. Recipes will probably have to be altered depending on results of diagnostic tests.

Here is a good page discussing the nutritional management of this disease, along with some recipes to get you started: http://www.dogcathomeprepareddiet.com/diet_and_chronic_renal_disease.html

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much Rene, the calcium & phosphorus graphs and analysis was exactly what I was looking for. He's on Renal food currently but really fussy so I will need to try other things hence why I wanted the graphs to ensure things I am using as alternatives are good for him. Its so hard trying to manually work out things but its only been 4 days so I'll get there, every little bit of information helps.

I had only signed up to this software yesterday so thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
